Renewable energy represented 30 % of China’s power consumption in 2021, most provinces reach RPS targets

The National Energy Administration (NEA) released the results of the ‘Renewable Energy Power Development Monitoring and Evaluation’.

In 2021, the actual national consumption of renewable energy power reached 2,445TWh, accounting for 29.4% of the total electricity consumption, a 0.6 percentage points increase year-on-year. Power generation was dominated by hydropower, representing 16.0 % of total power generation, while wind, solar, and biomass represented 7.8%, 3.9%, and 2.0%, respectively. Total renewable power installed capacity reached 1063 GW, representing nearly half of China’s total power generation installed capacity.

Such penetration rates of renewable power are in line with China’s targets, as most provinces have reached or exceeded their Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements.
