No new coal power projects should be built purely for power generation during the 14th FYP

China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) recently published a letter concerning the development of new coal plants in China. The document mentioned that coal power will ensure the country’s energy security by developing peak shaving units and support units and that their development will be strictly controlled. Notably, according to the documents, in principle, coal power projects that are purely for the purpose of power generation will no longer be built. In the future coal-fired power plants will be deployed, according to energy demand, as the backbone to secure energy supply and provide regulation support for renewable penetration.
